My View On Idol Worship

At school my teachers and other students will ask questions like:
If idols are man-made, how can they be gods?
2. My Thoughts
Personally, I believe that Idols were more of like a place for the gods to reside in(Like the tabernacle). The romans and greeks built statues of their gods and worshipped their gods through there, but they did not believe that the idols themselves were gods.
