1.1. Jewish army captain Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason for allegedly selling military secrets to the Germans in 1894.
- Antisemitic groups in France pushed the rhetoric that the Jews were not loyal to France
- Convicted on fake evidence based on similar handwriting styles(scapegoat)
- Dreyfus was publicly shamed and humiliated
- Dreyfus remained loyal to France despite this treatment
1.2. Led to a widespread outbreak of antisemitism
- The event led to a realization that assimilation into European culture was not going to provide enough protection for Jews and the need for a Jewish state was evident.
