1. The Dreyfus affair was a political crisis in France that began in 1894 and ended in 1906.

1.1. Jewish army captain Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason for allegedly selling military secrets to the Germans in 1894.

  • Antisemitic groups in France pushed the rhetoric that the Jews were not loyal to France
  • Convicted on fake evidence based on similar handwriting styles(scapegoat)
  • Dreyfus was publicly shamed and humiliated
    • Dreyfus remained loyal to France despite this treatment

1.2. Led to a widespread outbreak of antisemitism

  • The event led to a realization that assimilation into European culture was not going to provide enough protection for Jews and the need for a Jewish state was evident.
