  • As Zionists began advocating for land in the 19th century, the ancient land of Israel was part of the Ottoman empire.
    • The ottomans controlled this region since the 16th century
  • At the beginning of the Ottoman empire they were tolerant towards jews.
    • However the Turks valued Palestine only as a source of revenue.
    • They eventually taxed the jews heavily
  • Oppression of the jews eventually led to the decline of the Jewish population in the region
    • By the end of the 1600s roughly 7,000 Jews were left in their ancestral homeland
