- The ottomans controlled this region since the 16th century
- At the beginning of the Ottoman empire they were tolerant towards jews.
- However the Turks valued Palestine only as a source of revenue.
- They eventually taxed the jews heavily
- Oppression of the jews eventually led to the decline of the Jewish population in the region
- By the end of the 1600s roughly 7,000 Jews were left in their ancestral homeland
