1. Israelis needed to compromise to meet the needs of various jews living in the new country

  • Religious Jew were committed to focusing on halachah
    • Major compromises included:
      • Closing state-run businesses on Shabbat
      • Marriage and divorce to the religious courts(Beit Din)
    • Provisional government that formed in 1948 included representatives from all the various segments of the zionism movement
    • Christians, Muslims, and Jews would have their own religious authorities
    • Due to all these challenges and varying opinions, israel has no written constitution
