Shemot 1:11
*1. Full sentence.
וַיָּשִׂ֤ימוּ עָלָיו֙ שָׂרֵ֣י מִסִּ֔ים לְמַ֥עַן עַנֹּת֖וֹ בְּסִבְלֹתָ֑ם וַיִּ֜בֶן עָרֵ֤י מִסְכְּנוֹת֙ לְפַרְעֹ֔ה אֶת־פִּתֹ֖ם וְאֶת־רַעַמְסֵֽס׃ So they set taskmasters over them to oppress them with forced labor; and they built garrison cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.
2. The authorities elected tax collectors
וַיָּשִׂ֤ימוּ עָלָיו֙ שָׂרֵ֣י מִסִּ֔ים
- Rashi says: The tax came in the form of precious stones and labor
- Raabi Saadia Gi'dion says: This was also a form of degradation, they wanted to humiliate the jews.
3. They intended to cause suffering
לְמַ֥עַן עַנֹּת֖וֹ בְּסִבְלֹתָ֑ם
- The egyptians intended for the jews to suffer.
4. They made them build storage cities
וַיִּ֜בֶן עָרֵ֤י מִסְכְּנוֹת֙ לְפַרְעֹ֔ה אֶת־פִּתֹ֖ם וְאֶת־רַעַמְסֵֽס
- The Jews had to build large storage components, the names of these were pithom and raamses. This was the beginning of the new regime
