Shemot 1:15
* school tanakhוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖ת הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת אֲשֶׁ֨ר שֵׁ֤ם הָֽאַחַת֙ שִׁפְרָ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פּוּעָֽה׃
The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,
1. Significance
- Pharoah understood the first phase failed– he switched to another plan(see: three phases of jewish removal from egypt)
- The next plan was to kill the Jewish baby boys. He chose the midwives for this job because of their unique positions–they had access to the mothers in their most vulnerable state.
- He chose Shiphrah and Puah for this job because they were the heads(leaders) of the midwives
