A Philosophical Look at System Dynamics(1977)
*1. Terminology
- System dynamics = How systems change over time
2. System Dynamics as a Philosophy
System dynamics is interested in how things change over time. It is an attempt to explore whole system behavior. There are 4 aspects we will go over: Causal linkages, Feedback loops, Rates & Levels, and structural relationships.
2.1. Causal Linkages
We try to model which things cause others. They should be clear (ie. "births → population). This is different from a correlational approach where neither of the things cause each other. Most relationships in a system are non-linear, but this does not matter.
