וַיָּ֥קׇם מֶֽלֶךְ־חָדָ֖שׁ עַל־מִצְרָ֑יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־יָדַ֖ע אֶת־יוֹסֵֽף׃ A new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph.
1.1. Rashi gives two explanations for the meaning of 'new'
1.1.1. The king was really new
- A new king arose who had know idea about joseph and his family
- His reasoning for this statement is that it said "new" and not "and the king died", meaning a new one rose to power.
1.1.2. The king pretended he didnt know joseph
- The king knew joseph but pretendd not to know
- his reasoning for this was that joseph's reputation was so big that its impossible not to know
1.2. Ibn Ezra disagrees with both opinions
He states that the king was considered new because he didnt come from the royal family.
