Lesson 6: Biodiversity
* school science ecology1. Biodiversity
- Biodiversity, also known as biological diversity is the variety of life in a particular ecosytem
- Over time, life will go into places where life
- As biodiversity progresses, a greater number of living things can be possibe inside the ecosystem
- This creates more interactions between species in the ecosystem
- Ensures sustainability.
- More biodiversity = healthier ecosystem.
2. Species Loss
- Many species are going extinct
- Species loss is normal, but it should be slow
- Species loss can be caused by:
- Overpopulatio nof predators
- overhunting/poaching
- Invasive species
- Species loss can be caused by:
- Biodiversity an be negatively impacted by climate change, pollution, Habitat Loss & Destruction (deforestation, …)
2.1. Species Loss–Terms
Import terms to describe species at risk
- Organisms can jump between these
| Term | Defintion |
|---|---|
| Extinct in a specific area | Extirpated |
| Endangered | A species facing imminent extirpation or extinction |
| Threatened | A species that is likely to become endangered if factors influencing its survival remain constant |
