    • Flanked by two oceans
    • Many ressources
    • Friendly neighbour in the north (Canada) and nonthreatening southern neighbour(Mexico)
  • The us has about 10x the canadian population. This makes it a global powerhouse

2. Human Geography Intro (pp. 45-47)

  • Human geography concerns the relationships between humans * their surroundings
  • This unit places a heavy emphasis on the indigenous people

2.1. Key Terms

  • The birth rate is the amount of annual births per 1000 people. It is known as the fertility rate
  • The death rate is the annual deaths in a population per 1000 people.
  • The natural increase rate is the difference between the birth & death rate

2.2. The indigenous people were first to come to Canada

  • They came through a land bridge near alaska
  • The land bridge covered the bering sea
  • The diomede slands were located between alaska and siberia. The big is russian and the other is american.
  • The us bought alaska in 1867 which was the same year canada was established.
  • The United States purchased Alaska in 1867 (the same year Canada became a country) for $7.2 million (note: historically, not $40 million. see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Purchase; related: Opinion on wikipedia).
  • They later discovered oil in alaska
