Fundamentals of Binary and Bits

1. A bit (“binary digit”) is the smallest unit of digital information.

A bit can only be 0 or 1, representing two physical states (voltage/no voltage, magnetic direction, transistor on/off, … etc). Humans normally think in decimal (base 10) which uses digits 0-9, but computers use binary(see: Counting In Binary). As you combine more bits, the number of possible values grows according to powers of two.
