The Meaning of Information Depends On Interpretation

1. A byte is just 8 bits — the computer interprets them based on context:

  • As a number (0–255)(see: Counting In Binary)
  • As a character (ASCII, UTF-8, etc.)
  • As an instruction (machine code)
  • As part of a pixel (RGB data)
  • As audio or compressed data
  • The meaning is not in the bits but in the program reading them.
