1. Preface

You will notice I use references in my notes. This is how I take them. If you read them on https://garden.tweetor.org, you would be able to follow them. For now, follow: (Structure of the Earth + Continental Drift & Plate tectonics).

Would it help if cite my previous notes? This will get more complex as the year goes on.

2. Background

(see: Alfred Wegener) suggested that the continents are moving–they were once together(see: Continental Drift Theory). He has 4 main pieces of evidence: geological fit, fossils, geologic structures, and paleoclimate indicators.

3. Geological Fit

If we look at a map of earth, it is easy to see that the continents fit together.

4. Fossil Evidence

The mesosaurus lived only in shallow freshwater. We find fossils of it on the east coast of south america and the west coast of Africa. ∴ The mesosaurus lived when these continents were connected. Other fossils also support this conclusion.

5. Geologic Structures.

We can find the same type of rocks in Canada, the uk, and scandanavia. Identical rock formations are present across continents. ∴ These mountains were once connected, but split due to continental drift

6. Paleoclimate Indicators

Glaciers leave striations(the state of having multiple stria; having multiple thin narrow grooves) when they move. Tropical rainforests in South America and Africa have glacial striations. ∴ They were not always rainforests. They were once close to antarctica. This supports continental drift_

Also, bituminous coal can be found in not-so tropical areas like europe. This is importnat because Bituminous coal is formed by compressed dead tropical plants. ∴ Those areas were once tropical, but the continents drifted.
