King of Egypt dies. Bnei Yisrael cry out. God hears. Rashi: Pharaoh killed baby boys → punished. Moshe now must return.

2. סמיכות פרשיות (Proximity of Parshiot)

Adjacent sections are connected. Example: Decree to kill boys (1:22) → Pharaoh’s death (2:23).

3. 2:24–25

God remembers covenant (Brit Bein HaBetarim). He sees, hears, knows their suffering. Redemption begins spiritually.

4. Background to Burning Bush

Moshe kills Egyptian (2:15), flees to Midian. Marries Zipporah. Would be killed if he stayed. Shemot 3 – The Burning Bush & Mission

5. 3:1

Leads sheep deep into desert → foreshadows leading Israel. Horeb = Sinai = Mountain of God. Horeb = dry (Ibn Ezra).

6. 3:2

Angel in heart of flame.Bush burns but not consumed. Thorn bush = Israel in Egypt.

7. 3:3–4

Moshe turns aside → greatness. “Moshe Moshe” → importance. “Hineni” → trust.

8. 3:5

Remove shoes → holy ground. Ramban: not yet holy enough to approach.

9. 3:6

Moshe hides face. Reminder of covenant.

10. 3:7–8

“I have surely seen” → even private pain (Ramban). God shares suffering. Will redeem and bring to Israel.

11. 3:9

Ibn Ezra: hears repentant cries. Sforno: suffering justified.

12. 3:10–12

Moshe chosen leader. “Who am I?” God: “I will be with you.” Sign: burning bush.

13. 3:13–15

“Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh.” Eternal name. Gather elders.

14. 3:16–23

Jews will listen.

Asks Yitro permission → loyalty. Pharaoh who wanted him dead is gone. Donkey parallel to Akeidah (Rashi). God will harden Pharaoh’s heart.

19. Brit Milah Incident (4:24–26)

Angel threatens Moshe. Son not circumcised. Zipporah performs brit. Moshe saved.
