1. Description

  • The course will cover the periods of the First and Second Temples and the aftermath of their destruction, the emergence of christianity and the Rabbinic period.
  • We will first explore how early Jewish communities in Judah managed through babylonian, persian, greek, and roman rule.
  • We will study the hasmonean kingdom and jewish sectarianism in the ancient world
  • We will then look at how the jewish people managed in the aftermath of the destruction of the second temple
  • The final focus of the grade 9 course is the writing of mishnah and Talmud
  • The course introduces the student to primary sources and encourages us to become familiar with the major ancient jewish writings.
  • Through the study of both primary and secondary sources, students will earn about the relationships that existed between Jews and their non-Jewish neighbors and host societies in ancient Judah and beyond.
