"Hope" is the thing with feathers–
That perches in the soul–
- This Implies that hope is found from within and is constant.
- This idea is reinforced by the next few lines
2. Hope is prevalent in times of crisis
And never stops–at all–
And sweetest–in the Gale–is heard–
- The word "sweetest" means most pleasant
- A "Gale is a very strong wind or storm"
- This insinuates that hopes presence is most beautifull & clear during lifes storms
3. Hope is not transactional
Yet–never–in Extremity,
It asked a crumb–of Me.
- Unlike other forms of comfort that require something in exchange(ex: gambling, consuming media, …)
- This reinforces the belief that hope is a constant
- Hope is reliable because it doesn't judge or demand
