1. Course Description

  • The course focuses on rabbinic values and the application of these values in student's lives.

1.1. Holidays

  • The holy days during tishrei are central events in their jewish life
  • - The first part will concentrate on these holidays
  • Short lessons on Hanukkah, Purim, Pesach, and Shavuot will precede each Holiday after

1.2. Family Obligations

  • Identify the obligations family members have for each other and how family relations become a training ground for civic life

1.3. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

  • ???
  • This segment addresses the conflicts between human rule over animals and Judaism's elevation of animals to the status of fellow creatures

1.4. Tefilah

  • Compare the differences between fixed and spontaneous prayer
  • Learn why we pray and how prayer can be essential to living a meaningful life

1.5. Language

  • Study the various ways language can be abused and how Judaism seeks to prevent such abuse and why(Lashon Hara)

2. Expectations

  • Develop the ability to identify rabbinic values in text
  • Apply these values to life
  • Know details of jewish practice in the areas studied
  • Read fluently and accurately explain Rabbinic and Biblical texts that were specified
  • Understand rabbinic methodology used in deriving Halacha in the specific topic discussed
  • Associate jewish experiences and authentic practices with Jewish texts and jewish identity
