  • teddy roosevelt(i think)

1. We have a demo on the 29th

2. TODO Review NOTES:

3. TODO Test Review   GEOGRAPHY REVIEW TEST

3.1. Scale

Scale displays the relationship Between a distance on a map and the physical distance

see: Scale

  • Expressed as a ratio \(1cm:50km\)
  • Can also be expressed as a linear scale

see: Scale

3.2. Compass Rose

  • The compass rose shows the four cardinal directions(North, East, South, West) on the map. The north point is always facing upwards.

3.3. Map Distortion

  • To translate the globe onto something flat, we use something called projection
  • This leads to misrepresentations of shape, area, distance, or directions
  • various map projections exist to minimize specific distortions
  • Every single form of projection have their own trade offs

(see:It is impossible to represent a sphere as a flat plane without some form of distortion)

3.3.1. Mercator

The standard map projection. Accurately displays shape and direction, but fails to represent size properly

3.3.2. Gall-Peter map projection

  • Also known as the equal area projection
  • Are is represented equally
  • However, shape is distorted

3.4. Types of Maps

3.4.1. Political Map

Meant to display human-made borders with lines.

(see: Political map)

  • Displays geographical boundaries and features related to human-created boundaries of the world, continents, and major geographic regions

3.4.2. Physical Map

  • Intended to reveal details about the landscape
  • Names of major features are shown & elevation is indicated through shading

(see: Physical map)

3.4.3. Topographical Map

  • Use contour lines to indicate terrain

(see:Topographical map)

  • Shows the three-dimensional shape and features of the earth's surface on a two-dimensional surface using contour lines to represent elevation and other symbols for other geographical features

3.4.4. Thematic Map

  • highlight information on a single topic such as population density or weather
  • Meant to represent Data

(see:Thematic maps)

  • Shows the spatial distribution of one or more special topics
  • Focused on representing data patterns

3.5. Map exercise

  • You will be given a map and asked to describe it, practice this on the textbook

4. Elsewhere
