- It is the cycling of matter through the biotic and abiotic environment
- Matter cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred
- Matter is anything that takes up space
- Matter is recycled and reused through the biotic(Biosphere) and abiotic(see: Abiotic & Biotic Factors) parts of the ecosystem
