1. An integer is a number that is not a fraction

1.1. Simplifying Integer Double-Signs

Double-Sign Meaning
++ +
-- +
+- -
-+ -

1.2. Negative Bases In Powers

  • If the exponent is an odd number, the result will be negative
\begin{equation} (-2)^3 = -8 \end{equation}
  • If the exponent is even, the result will be postive

    \begin{equation} (-2)^2 = 4 \end{equation}

1.3. Negative Exponents in Powers

  • In the case of a negative exponent, division is performed
\begin{equation} \begin{aligned} & = 2^{-3} \\ & = (\frac{1}{2})^3 \\ & = \frac{1\times1\times1}{2\times2\times2} & = \frac{1}{8} \end{aligned} \end{equation}

1.4. BEDMAS and Negatives

  • If the negative is outside of the brackets, the base is positive
  • This is beause of BEDMAS. Negative numbers fall under subtraction so we do division/multiplication/powers before them
