The first Zionist congress met in august 1897 in Basel, Switzerland.
1. Differences within the Zionist movement
- Practical Zionists focused their efforts on settling the land
- Religious Zionists believed the Jewish homeland should follow Jewish law.
- Socialist Zionists were interested in matters of communal living, social justice, and equality.
- Labor Zionists emphasized the importance of working the land and living close to nature.
- Cultural Zionists placed a higher value on Jewish identity and history
- Messianic Zionists believed that establishing a Jewish state would help bring about the messiah.
