The first Zionist congress met in august 1897 in Basel, Switzerland.

  • Practical Zionists focused their efforts on settling the land
  • Religious Zionists believed the Jewish homeland should follow Jewish law.
  • Socialist Zionists were interested in matters of communal living, social justice, and equality.
  • Labor Zionists emphasized the importance of working the land and living close to nature.
  • Cultural Zionists placed a higher value on Jewish identity and history
  • Messianic Zionists believed that establishing a Jewish state would help bring about the messiah.
