1. Britain wanted to gain american support in WW1
- Hoped that if the American Jews saw britain helping to create a jewish homeland it could lead to jews supporting the british and joining WW1
2. The british issue a letter from lord arthur balfour(foreign secretary) to lord walter rothschild. This was known as the balfour declaration
Showcased support for the
establishment in palestine for a national home for the jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the acheivement of this object"
- Recognized the right for jews to establish their national homeland in the land of Palestine(Overall win for zionists)
3. However, it also stated,
it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religipous rights of existing non-jewish communities in palestine.
