* jewishstudies israel

The guys met at Sanremo, Italy in 1920.

  • They discarded Sykes-picot
  • The league of nations thought that self-determination was important
  • Not everyone got their state in the sanremo thing
  • They got mandates instead, a territory governed by an allied power.
  • After they proved they could govern themselves they would get their own independent state.
  • The mandates had an expiration date so after a while all of the mandates became independent countries.
  • Jews and Arabs didn't like the mandates and they fought each other.
  • Sykes-Picot envisioned the middle east merely as a way to get money. The sanremo conference codified that after a transition period the middle east would be independent. They became independent after 1949
  • The sanremo backed up the Balfour declaration and said that Jews would get their own state in Palestine.
  • Sanremo allowed for israel, iraq, jordan, lebanon, and syria to became states.
