Sedimentation
* school science1. Definition
Sedimentation is the process by which particles (like sand, silt, or organic material) settle out of water or air and accumulate in layers on the Earth’s surface.
- Over long periods, these layers become compacted and cemented together, forming sedimentary rocks.
- In The Carbon Cycle, sedimentation traps organic carbon from dead plants and animals, storing it deep within the lithosphere.
- This stored carbon can later be released through Volcanic Eruptions or the burning of Fossil Fuels.
