Invasive Species
* school science def ecology draft- Invasive species is when we introduce organisms that do not belong into a local ecosystem
- This damages the local food chain/web and increases competition
- An invasive species is a non-native species whose intentional or accidental introduction negatively impacts the natural environment
- They can change species dynamics within an ecosystem
- Could potentially cause/bring diseases
- Competition with native species for food can cause native populations to decline
- They can also sometimes negatively impact biodiversity.
1. Controlling invasive species
1.1. Chemical Control
- Pesticides are used against unwanted population
- May kill non-target native species
1.2. Mechanical Control
- Physical barriers, hunting, and trapping of unwanted populations
- Entails physically isolating and hunting an organism.
1.3. Biological Control
- Intentionally introducing organisms to control invasive species
- New species might become new invaders.
