The greatest obstacle to enlightenment is the belief that one is not enlightened
* philosophyThe greatest obstacle to enlightenment is the belief that one is not enlightened
- Ramana Maharshi,
1. The Nature of enlightenment
Enlightenment isn't something you get or a state you achieve. It's not a destination you arrive at after a long journey. Instead, it is the realization of your true nature, which is the ultimate reality itself. This reality is already present, and it is what you are, at this very moment.
2. The phrase, "The belief that one is not enlightened," is the key.
- The "one" This refers to a separate individual self, the ego. Nondualism teaches that this separation is an illusion. The seeker is the sought. The belief that they are separate keeps the illusion of duality alive. Anatta(No-self)
- It creates a future goal: When your believe you're not enlightened, you place enlightenment in the future. This constant pursuit for a future state prevents you from seeing the truth that is present here and now. The only time enlightenment can be realized is in the present moment, because there is no other moment
- its a form of clinging The very act of believing you are not enlightened is a subtle form of clinging to a specific self-image. This spiritual ego, while seemingly virtuous, is just another layer of the illusory self that must be let go of.
