Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came to draw water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock; וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ הָרֹעִ֖ים וַיְגָרְשׁ֑וּם וַיָּ֤קׇם מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיּ֣וֹשִׁעָ֔ן וַיַּ֖שְׁקְ אֶת־צֹאנָֽם׃ but shepherds came and drove them off. Moses rose to their defense, and he watered their flock.
2. Explanation
- The leader of midion has 7 daughters. He is a religious leader with strong moral values
- He has 0 male children
- The sisters share the burden of providing for the family–they take their father's sheep and feed them water.
- They come to the well with a bucket tied to a string they put down in the water and fill it up and the sheep drink from its contents
- And the shephard men come early and they push away the girls
- Moses witnesses this injustice and decides to act: He pushes them away and waters the sheep because he cannot stand what they did
- This a theme in midian: women are below men
