But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and free the Israelites from Egypt?”
1.2. Explanation
Moses says he is not good enough for this role–He doesnt believe he can rescue the israelites
2. Shemot 3:12
2.1. Source
And [God] said, “I will be with you; that shall be your sign that it was I who sent you. And when you have freed the people from Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.”
2.2. Explanation
God must respond. He tells moses he will be with him–He is calming Moses down. He will give Moses a sign that god is with him. One of these signs is the burning bush. He declares himself the source of Moses' power.

Moses said to God, “When I come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers’ [house] has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is [God’s] name?’ what shall I say to them?”
3.2. Explanation
Moses doesnt accept this. He has spent years of his life in midian. Moses thinks the Jews will doubt him and ask for gods name. How should he respond?
4. Shemot 3:14

And God said to Moses, “Ehyeh-Asher-Ehyeh,” continuing, “Thus shall you say to the Israelites, ‘Ehyeh sent me to you.’”
4.2. Explanation
This means that he is the only one who can define his existence. He is not influenced by external fafctors and acts freely. God refreshes their memory of the forefathers
5. Shemot 3:15

And God said further to Moses, “Thus shall you speak to the Israelites: GOD [יהוה], the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you: This shall be My name forever, This My appellation for all eternity.
5.2. Explanation
God asssumes moses is convinced. He starts to offer practical guidance: Gather the israelites and tell them HASHEM god of their forefathers appeared and will be with you because he saw what happened to them.

6.2. Explanation
God saw their slavery and repentance. He wants to save them. He wants moses to tell the jews everything he told them.
7. Shemot 3:17

7.2. Explanation
Hashem says he must fulfill the covenant now. He will save them from egypt and return them to the promised land. However, there are already people there.

They will listen to you; then you shall go with the elders of Israel to the king of Egypt and you shall say to him, ‘The ETERNAL, the God of the Hebrews, became manifest to us. Now therefore, let us go a distance of three days into the wilderness to sacrifice to the ETERNAL our God.’
8.2. Explanation
The jews will listen to moses. They will not argue. After the leaders believe you, you wll make a delegation with them to the king of pharoah: "God appeared to us. Let us go to the desert for three days to sacrifice."
8.2.1. Commentary
- This is an honest religious will–not an attempt to trick pharoah.
- They wanted to go out for sacrifice out of consideration–they didnt want to sacrifice an egyptian holy animal

Yet I know that the king of Egypt will let you go only because of a greater might.
9.2. Explanation
Pharoah is very stubborn and cruel. He is also selfish. God says that pharoah will probably not listen if he doesnt force him.
10. Shemot 3:20

So I will stretch out My hand and smite Egypt with various wonders that I will work upon them; after that he shall let you go.
10.2. Explanation
This is the only way to take them out. God says he will make many miracles

But Moses spoke up and said, “What if they do not believe me and do not listen to me, but say: GOD did not appear to you?”
12.2. Explanation
God started with practical guidelines. He prepares moses for a problematic situation. Moses still has doubts on is ability to fulfil this mission. Moses worries that israel will not believe him. Heis scared they will accuse him of lying
12.2.1. Ramban
- I have two questions: Can god trick someone? And why does he assume moses is convinced in the argument of the burning bush if he knows how moses feels?
12.3. Can God Trick Someone?
? …
12.4. And why does he assume moses is convinced in the argument of the burning bush if he knows how moses feels?
Going over this, I realise it is coercion. God overwrites moses' definition of self being "not capable". Moses’ judgment about himself is treated as false.
12.4.1. But wait? Coercion requires an external force overpowering an independent will.
If god were to coerce moses, he would have to be separate. This leads to the development of our principal of symmetry, and also the divine-source protocol Ethics(6) . God can coerce because he is not another agent. There is no boundary between us and Him.
This is similar to Ein Sof/Keter. God is not one will competing with others God is the ground of will itself
13. Shemot 4:2-4
13.1. Source
GOD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A rod.” וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַשְׁלִיכֵ֣הוּ אַ֔רְצָה וַיַּשְׁלִכֵ֥הוּ אַ֖רְצָה וַיְהִ֣י לְנָחָ֑שׁ וַיָּ֥נׇס מֹשֶׁ֖ה מִפָּנָֽיו׃ “Cast it on the ground.” He cast it on the ground and it became a snake; and Moses recoiled from it. Then GOD said to Moses, “Put out your hand and grasp it by the tail”—he put out his hand and seized it, and it became a rod in his hand—
13.2. Explanation
God asks moses what is in his hand. Moses says he has a staff. God tells moses to throw his stick to the ground. It runs into a snake and he jumps back. God tells him to hold the snake by its tail and it will return to its original form.
13.2.1. Why a snake?
Because snakes symbolize lashon hara. Moses talks badly about the jewish nation.

19.2. Explanation
- Moses tells god he cannot speak well. He has a stutter. THis is another excuse to not do what god wants him to do.
